Mark Peter Hughes by Diana Horvat What do Mark Peter Hughes and John Lennon of the legendary Beatles have in common? They're both famous? They share a love of rock and roll? Well, yes . . . but they were also born in the same hospital in Liverpool, England. Although Mark Peter Hughes moved to the United States while still a baby, grew up in Rhode Island, and now makes Massachusetts his home, he has been inspired by his small connection with the Beatles since way back at the Oxford Street Maternity Hospital in Liverpool. Mark grew up playing in "oddball" rock bands and "trying to change the world." He did a good job of making his own mark (no pun intended) with his first book, I Am the Wallpaper, by relating to teens with his story about a thirteen-year-old girl who becomes an overnight Internet sensation. Shortly after this first success, Mark began writing Lemonade Mouth, basing it loosely upon The Beatles Anthology, which is a compilation of interviews of the individual members of the Beatles - or the Fab Four - who as a group, became a worldwide phenomenon. Lemonade Mouth is told from the perspective of the five individual members of an unlikely band, which as a unit, becomes its own instrument (again, no pun intended) of change in Hughes' fictional world. Lemonade Mouth was so popular that Disney adapted it for film, and it became the #1 cable movie of 2011. The movie was also a hit and was adapted back into another book for younger readers titled Lemonade Mouth: Adapted Movie Tie-In Edition. Readers wanted even more, so the sequel Lemonade Mouth Puckers Up was born. This book was inspired by Mark's "imagining how a group of people (kids in this case) might really be able to work together to incite a revolution for positive changes in the world." While the phenomenon known as Lemonade Mouth may not be quite as big as the Beatles, it has received excellent reviews for its humor and charm in both its book and movie forms. Mark is a master at creating humorous situations which seem real in fictional worlds, but he also created a believable dystopian world where his imagined characters live in an artificial domed city as protection from a savage desert wasteland. His book A Crack in the Sky, the first in the Greenhouse Chronicles series, has similar appeal for teens who prefer to be scared silly as his other works do for those who like to laugh themselves silly. Humorous or serious, Mark Peter Hughes is seriously an exceptionally excellent Massachusetts author. Bibliography "About Mark."
